Paul’s Illustration Art

At first glance, it isn’t difficult to identify Paul Morin’s unique style on the pages of a children’s book.  His paintings are easily distinguishable from those of other illustrators and are a testament to the enormous amount of research he does for a book.  Learning all he can about the subject and immersing himself in the culture of the people, he is able to bring this knowledge into his art.

Although Paul’s pictures depict the characters and settings written about in the text of a story, the images leave much to the imagination of the viewer. “Impressionistic realism”, he calls it.  Because of this, the viewer is very involved in the process of constructing meaning from the book.

Paul’s passion for life is very obvious in his work.  Inspired by James Hill and expressionists Monet and Tom Thompson, his illustrations:

“resemble fine paintings done on old linen”

Maryleah Otto for CM: A Reviewing Journal of Canadian Materials for Young People.

“complement and enrich the text”

MaryLynn Gagne for CM: A Reviewing Journal of Canadian Materials for Young People.

“explore the spiritual connections that bind us as a universal community”

The Wellington County Museum and Archives

“convey every bit as much emotion, atmosphere and action as the text”

Maryleah Otto for CM: A Reviewing Journal of Canadian Materials for Young People.
